For the brightest electric guitar recording, start with an R-121 six inches from the grillclothe, dead center on one of the speakers. An R-121 at six inches will sound closer than you'd expect due to the fast transient response of the ribbon. The mic on the right, six inches off the cabinet, was used to record track "a". At five inches and closer, the sound will get progressively warmer and thicker due to proximity effect. Many people start at six inches and just leave it there.

Putting some distance between the cabinet and an R-121 gives you more of an ambient, live sound and brings the room sound more into play - more of a Stevie Ray Vaughan vibe. Track "b" was recorded on the mic on the left, three feet off the cabinet.

Same Strat-Matchless combination as a. R-121 THREE FEET FROM CABINET, three feet high and pointed directly at the cabinet. At this distance, the cabinet tone becomes more apparent and room ambience plays a more important role in the overall sound. Recorded directly to 20-bit ADAT at Mad Dog Studios - Burbank, CA
