Malcolm McNab Recording 'Exquisite'

Back to Session Photos

CD cover

Malcolm McNab is one of the world's busiest trumpet players. He has played solo and section trumpet on nearly two thousand movie scores. Malcolm long harbored the dream of recording Tchaikovsky's enormously challenging Concerto for Violin & Orchestra in D Major, Op. 35, a piece that was called "unplayable" by the greatest violinists of Tchaikovsky's time. Teaming up with fellow trumpet player and producer Gary Grant, Malcolm's dream was realized in his stunning CD Exquisite.

Exquisite was recorded at Dreadnought Studios, Malcolm's home studio. The Royer SF-24 active stereo ribbon mic was used throughout the entire recording, positioned 10 feet high and back from the performers. In the mix, 70% of the overall orchestra sound was from that one SF-24. Producer Gary Grant said the SF-24 "became the critical piece that unified the sonic quality of the recording."
