The Royer Demo CD is a general introduction to ribbon microphones, as well as an invaluable tool for learning about how you can use ribbons in your recordings.
In this CD, you'll hear Royer ribbons used on a wide variety of instruments and vocalists. You'll also hear a couple of examples of Coles and AEA ribbon microphones. A number of the tracks were recorded by heavy-hitter producers and engineers, while others were recorded by friends in local studios. The examples range from heavy rock & pop to jazz and classical, big drums and guitars to classical harp and piano, Grammy winning productions to home brewed recordings.
Tip: Don't miss the first two Orchestra tracks. It's a full orchestra recorded with one SF-12 stereo ribbon mic - a serious eye-opener!
Steve Albini, a longtime ribbon microphone enthusiast, recorded a microphone comparison section for this CD that allows you to experience the sound of Royer ribbons next to other well known microphones. His commentary is insightful and educational.
Royer Demo CD Review - Tape Op
Ostensibly this is a promotional device for Royer ribbon mics, a product that we highly recommend here at Tape Op, but there's something that makes this CD a cut above. Sure, you may want to skip over an excerpt of "There She Goes" by Sixpence None the Richer or Jewel singing "Winter Wonderland", but there's ample audible proof that the R-121 sounds amazing on electric guitar on many of the following tracks. The "something special" though is the Microphone Comparisons with Steve Albini at the end of the CD. Steve goes through and compares the R-121 to other mics (Coles 4038, SM57, etc.) and provides us with his wonderful dry commentary. We love ya Steve! Truly one of our favorite CDs at the studio these days. -Tape Op Magazine
